What is acupuncture & how does it work?

Acupuncture is an umbrella term for the use of needles and/or other stimuli to balance the free flow of vital energy called “qi”.  Our clinic uses sterile, disposable needles, Chinese herb formulas, electro-stimulation, and heat (infrared lamp).

Electromagnetic research has confirmed the locations of acupoints and meridians.  Modern research and experimentation have also discovered that acupuncture relieves pain by simultaneously increasing the body’s tolerance to pain and triggering the body to release endorphins and enkephalins, natural pain-killing chemicals.  In fact, acupuncture is so effective in stifling pain that it has been used in China in place of anesthesia during major surgeries.

Research has also found that acupuncture stimulation can fortify blood and energy to nourish body organs.  This influences the nervous and the secretive systems to balance hyperactive or hypoactive organs and systems, restoring them to their optimum conditions.  It can also bolster the body’s immune system to help prevent and fight diseases.

Is it Safe?

Acupuncture is a safe, effective form of therapy with no side-effects.  It is drug-free so there is no risk of developing drug dependencies.  Adverse effects to treatment are rare.  When developing a treatment plan, any pre-existing conditions, current medications, and pregnancy are considered in order to optimize results and prevent harm.

Does it hurt?

Hair-thin needles, only 1/10th the thickness of hypodermic needles, are used so treatments are relatively painless.  The majority of patients experience no pain upon needle insertion, and  a small number feel a slight pricking.  During the treatment, patients sometimes report tingling, heaviness or soreness, which is normal as energy rebalances in the body.

How to prepare for treatment?

Do not arrive rushed, inebriated, very fatigued, famished, or very full.  Wear loose, comfortable clothing (examination gowns are available), and maintain good personal hygiene to reduce the risk of bacterial infection.

What to expect during treatment?

Patients recline in a position best suited for the health condition to be treated. Although acupoints run over the surface of the body, those on the arms and legs are most often needled.  For musculo-skeletal problems, local points at or near the location of the problem are also often selected.

Needles are gently inserted and left in place for about 20 minutes.  At this time patients may experience a slight tingling as qi energy rebalances.  The general report from patients is a feeling of relaxation (many patients nap).  When electro-stimulation or heat is incorporated, patients feel a gentle pulsing at the site of the needled points.

Can acupuncture help with non-physical problems?

Yes! Acupuncture views the body, mind, and spirit as a whole. All physical disorders will cause an imbalance in the mental outlook and spirit of a person. This may manifest as depression, anxiety, anger, sadness, or frustration. Mental disturbances, stress, and emotional conflict will conversely effect the physical body, and can result in insomnia, lack of appetite, fatigue, menstrual disorders, migraines, susceptibility to disease, aches, pains, and any labeled disease one can imagine. Acupuncture treatments aim to restore the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. So, the physical and non-physical sides of a patient are treated at the same time.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments required depends on the duration, severity, and nature of the health condition and the state of the patient (mind, body, and spirit).  As with any form of medical care, attitude and lifestyle are factors that can change the course and outcome of treatment.  For minor acute ailments, it may take only one treatment to see improvement.  For more serious, chronic conditions, it may take six or more consecutive treatments.

It’s recommended to begin with two treatments per week.  As the person and condition improves, treatment frequency are reduced accordingly.  For general health maintenance or prevention, seasonal treatments are recommended.

In many cases, herbs are a powerful complement to acupuncture.

Does it only work if you have "faith" in it?

Acupuncture works great for animals, and they have no beliefs one way or the other.  So, one does not have to believe to get good results.

How does eastern medicine complement western medicine?

Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with western medicine. The top medical schools in the US, including Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Columbia, offer acupuncture as part of their medical school curriculum.  Western medical doctors increasingly refer patients for acupuncture treatments.

Advanced Pain Clinic has had great success with infertility patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and with offsetting the side effects of western medical treatments, such as nausea and fatigue from chemotherapy.  Acupuncture boosts the immune system to shorten recovery time and improve the effects of western medical treatments.
